Unique Software Platform to Improve Medical Pathology Education and Collaboration

A new software platform provides a flexible digital pathology solution for more efficient and effective medical training courses and sharing of high-quality images.

Ventana Medical Systems, Inc. (Ventana; Tucson, AZ, USA), member of the Roche Group (Basel, Switzerland), has now released "VENTANA Vector," a new software platform for pathology training and collaboration. The platform provides pathologists and educators with tools to build interactive training, from course development to student evaluation, and to quickly and easily share scanned images with colleagues around the globe. The software is available anywhere, anytime, and is supported on a range of tablets and mobile devices.

This innovative software enhances the learning experience, engagement, and collaboration for students while providing efficiencies for educators. Whole slide imaging has gained tremendous acceptance within pathology education because of its many advantages over traditional teaching methods. Courses that use glass slides face several potential challenges such as slide breakage, periodic re-cutting, limited availability, and the inherent quality inconsistency of multiple slide sets. "Digital pathology is gaining widespread adoption for medical education and training. The release of VENTANA Vector software expands our Digital Pathology portfolio to address the growing needs of the pathology education market. The software will make pathology training more accurate and cost-effective, while empowering students with collaborative learning strategies," said Vikram Mohan, international business leader, Digital Pathology, Ventana.

Many medical schools are relying less and less on the light microscope as the primary teaching tool in pathology. VENTANA Vector software can help standardize training content by enabling students to view high quality, consistent slide images, and eliminate the frustration of having to share limited resources such as slide sets and multi-head microscopes. "Now we can pick the best slides, scan them, and use the same digital slide set for all students. They can all access the same teaching materials anytime from their computer, tablet, or smart phone," said Dr. Sung, professor of Pathology, Women & Infants Hospital (Providence, RI, USA).

The VENTANA Vector software platform is unique in the digital pathology market in offering a highly customizable interface, ability for users to view on mobile devices with both Cloud and local hosting options, and is fully compatible with iScan Coreo and VENTANA iScan HT slide scanners.
