Robotic Liquid Handling Module Automates DNA Sample Enrichment Platforms

By BiotechDaily International staff writers
Posted on 14 Feb 2012

Genomics investigators can now take advantage of a new automated solution for DNA sample enrichment that combines sophisticated liquid handling robotics with state-of-the-art sequencing technology.

The novel research station combines the Hamilton Robotics (Reno, NV, USA) MICROLAB STARlet Liquid Handling Workstation and the Roche 454 Life Sciences (Branford, CT, USA) REM e liquid handling system for the GS Junior Benchtop Sequencing System.

The REM e System is a liquid handler accessory designed to fully automate the PCR enrichment and sequence primer annealing steps in the 454 Sequencer workflow. The module eliminates manual processing, including multiple wash cycles of hand pipetting, centrifugation, bead capture, and mixing. It reduces up to five hours of hands-on work into a simple 15-minute liquid handler setup.

The system, which can support up to four sequencing runs per day, enhances PCR enrichment accuracy and precision by minimizing user error, reducing variability, and eliminating potential sources of failure. The REM e System can be installed onto commonly used liquid handlers, such as the Hamilton STARlet.

The Hamilton STAR line workstations are based on air displacement pipetting technology. This increases accuracy and repeatability while providing chain of custody with pipette condition monitoring and recording. Each NIMBUS workstation can be configured with multiple arms and each arm can be configured with multiple pipetting and labware gripping devices. Pipetting channels and labware grippers move independently of each other, supporting the use of a wide range of labware. An autoload option provides barcode tracking of samples, labware, racks, and carriers.
