Highly Sensitive Laser Scanning to Advance Antibody Discovery

By BiotechDaily International staff writers
Posted on 31 Aug 2010

A new framework for highly sensitive laser scanning is now available to cell biologists and other life scientists working in the field of antibody discovery.

The new "Mirrorball” system is manufactured by TTP LabTech (Royston, United Kingdom), who maintain that it addresses one of the currently unmet needs of laser scanning instrumentation – that of high sensitivity. In addition, Mirrorball is advertised as the first laser scanning microplate cytometer to offer simultaneous laser scanning.

Mirrorball operates at high sensitivity that enables detection of proteins that are only found at low abundance. This ensures that the instrument is perfectly suited to mix-and-read assays for hybridoma screening and cell-surface receptor expression. Simultaneous laser scanning results in superior multiplexing and analytical capabilities that enable robust and rapid data generation. Label-free detection takes place concurrently with fluorescence measurements resulting in improved object recognition and fewer false negatives, based on individual object count. Minimal autofluorescence due to proprietary low loss optics and red 640 nm laser excitation leads to a high signal-to-noise ratio and guarantees robust data generation.

Dr. Wayne Bowen, CSO at TTP LabTech, said, "Mirrorball is TTP LabTech's response to requests from scientists for novel technologies in antibody discovery. We have listened, developed, and now delivered a high sensitivity microplate cytometer for fluorescence cellular screening.”
