A small footprint benchtop liquid handler that automates multiple gene assembly tasks and associated procedures such as PCR setup is now available for use by biotech and genomic research laboratories.

Analytik Jena AG (Jena; Germany) introduced the CyBio GeneTheatre platform at the 2015 London (United Kingdom), SynBioBETA meeting. SynBioBeta is a community of entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, and enthusiasts devoted to the responsible growth of the synthetic biology field.

GeneTheatre is an automated liquid handling benchtop system that greatly simplifies all low-throughput pipetting routines. In addition to microplate handling, this highly flexible workstation also accommodates the use of strips, single vessels, and glass slides. The instrument was designed to use Analytik Jena’s reagent kits for DNA purification.

Due to its compact design, GeneTheatre fits comfortably on any commercially available lab bench. The system readily adapts for the use with third party devices such as shakers or heating and cooling plates. Pipetting heads with one or eight channels with a volume range from 0.5 microliters to 1,000 microliters are available. A simple mechanism allows users to change the pipetting heads without tools, a process that does not require technical expertise.
